  77.   (1) WHAT IS GNA?

  79.       GNA is a non-profit corporation incorporated in the state of
  80.       Texas since November 1993, affiliated with the Usenet University
  81.       project. Its long-term goal[25] is to create an fully accredited
  82.       online university. To reach this goal it has short term plans
  83.       for 1993-94[26]: the fall '93 semester was devoted to
  84.       establishing the basic educational, technical and administrative
  85.       infrastructure. By summer 1994, GNA shall have released a press
  86.       release, a newsletter, and a catalog of classes[27] to be taught
  87.       in Spring '94 or later.
  88.  
  89.       GNA is also the world's first virtual corporation, and therefore
  90.       serves as a testbed for running organizations in the 21st
  91.       century. It shall also be an "umbrella"[28] bundling educational
  92.       Internet initiatives and easing the interaction between
  93.       professionals worldwide.

  253.   it is, however, recommended that you mail a consultant first unless
  254.   your inquiry concerns a specific GNA project.

  256.    (4) WHAT IF I HAVE ONLY [INTERNET] EMAIL ACCESS?
  257.  
  258.        If you cannot go through telnet, you can still retrieve WWW
  259.        documents by raw e-mail: get started by sending a mail to
  260.        test-list@info.cern.ch with a line in it saying
  261.

  264.   To obtain other documents, proceed in the same way using the "send"
  265.   command with a Web address as an argument.  The returned mail
  266.   contains a list of HTTP references (= Web addresses) at the end. One
  267.   mail to this mail robot can contain arbitrarily many "send" command
  268.   lines each of which will return one document to you (if the address
  269.   was correct).  Note that your mail system must have a mail gateway
  270.   to the internet mail.  Only WWW documents with less than 1000 lines
  271.   can be retrieved in this way, but this is true for almost all GNA
  272.   documents.  See also (16) for help on FTP/Email requests. If
  273.   there is a specific document you want but can't get, please contact

  283.   Note that direct telnet is not necessary to access a MOO server if
  284.   the link has been established in WWW or in a gopher telnet
  285.   item. Many people do have gopher and/or WWW but not direct
  286.   telnet. If the MOO is closed for you, but you may still participate
  287.   in GNA discussion on the Usenet or on the mailing lists[68] [see
  288.   also (3)].
  289.   Certain GNA courses[70] may be open to those with limited access.
  290.   The access required for a given course will be described in the
  291.   course catalog; in case of a question, prospective students are
  292.   strongly encouraged to contact course instructors.  Even in cases
  293.   where MOO access is desired, alternate arrangements may be able to
  294.   be made.

  296.    (5) WHOM CAN I CONTACT FOR HELP?
  297.  
  298.        See (2) for help concerning a particular GNA
  299.        project. General help is on the GNA-talk mailing list[72]. [See
  300.        also (3).]  General help is available through the
  301.        consultants[74], who will answer questions via email.  To get

  304.        read the latest GNA FAQ as well.

  306.    (6) WHO IS DECIDING ANYTHING AT GNA?
  307.  
  308.       The skeletal structure of the GNA is set down in the GNA Bylaws
  309.       and documents of incorporation[75].  Included in these documents
  310.       are descriptions of the positions of chief officers and the
  311.       board of directors, including their duties, and powers.  Most of
  312.       the GNA's decision making, however, goes on in committee
  313.       discussions and in small project teams.  This structure ensures
  314.       that decisions are made by individuals close to the problems
  315.       being addressed, while retaining a coherent organizational
  316.       structure.  For more information concerning the organization of

  323.    (7) WHERE ARE GNA PROJECTS AND DEVELOPMENT DISCUSSED?
  324.  
  325.       There are working groups for the discussion of GNA curricular
  326.       issues[78] and GNA technical projects[79], and the like. These
  327.       groups provide an open forum for debate and discussion of new
  328.       initiatives, while allowing groups working on different projects
  329.       to stay informed of general goings-on.  Each group has a mailing
  330.       list, and some hold regular meetings.
  331.   In addition to these formal group meetings, dicussion of projects
  332.   takes place via email between members and discussions on MOOs [see
  333.   (3)]. Interested parties are always invited to step forward and
  334.   voice their opinion(s) on any GNA initiative.

  336.    (8) WHEN WILL GNA INTERNET COURSES ACTUALLY START?
  337.  
  338.        At this stage, the GNA is offering experimental courses. These
  339.        should begin to be offered early in 1994.  Further developments
  340.        will include a curriculum document (the draft[81] (see
  341.        (12)) and GNA degree programs, as well as cooperative
  342.        ventures with other academic institutions.  For the latest
  343.        information concerning GNA offerings, consult the GNA Course
  344.        Catalog[83].

  346.    (9) WHAT IS THE TARGET AUDIENCE FOR GNA ACTIVITIES?
  347.  
  348.        The GNA's target audience is any individual who is interested
  349.        in the exchange of ideas and who has access to the internet in
  350.        some form.  In particular, individuals at small schools who
  351.        would like to have access to more diverse offerings and
  352.        individuals who are not in school currently but who seek to
  353.        expand their knowledge form the core of the GNA's current
  354.        target audience.  This is expected to change, however, as the
  355.        GNA expands its offerings, making it an attractive alternative
  356.        to conventional educational institutions in some areas.
  357.                          
  358.    (10) WILL GNA COURSES AND ACTIVITIES BE FREE?
  359.  
  360.         The GNA will have, ultimately, a mixture of free and tuition
  361.         based offerings.  As a non-profit corporation, the GNA is not
  362.         out to make money; at the same time, revenues are needed to
  363.         support the staff and machines that make the GNA happen.  For
  364.         this reason, it is likely that some of the GNA's programs will
  365.         ultimately require tuition.  This will vary on a
  366.         course/program basis, and information concerning the status of
  367.         any particular course or program will be contained within its
  368.         documentation.
  369.                          
  370.    (11) WHAT IS THE STATUS OF GNA TECHNICAL PROJECTS?
  371.  
  372.         One of the GNA technical metaprojects[84] is to build a
  373.         distributed virtual campus, composed of many MUD
  374.         servers. Currently, the most used server for the GNA project
  375.         is MOO.  For this purpose, a MOO network is being designed,
  376.         and many applications for it are being built. Currently
  377.         (March, 1993) the GNA net links 6 servers, including 5 MOOs
  378.         and 2 MUSEs. This metaproject is badly understaffed. If you

  382.    (12) WHAT IS THE STATUS OF THE GNA INTERNET CURRICULUM?
  383.  
  384.         The draft curriculum[85] is under construction, available also
  385.         via FTP from ftp.desy.de as file
  386.         /pub/uu-gna/curriculum.txt). [See also (7).] In addition,
  387.         organizations within and associated with the GNA are free to
  388.         have their own curriculum documents.
  389.  
  390.    (13) HOW CAN I HELP GNA?
  391.  
  392.        There are many outlets for those wishing to help the GNA. See
  393.        (2) for a complete list and contacts. To propose a GNA course,
  394.        use the GNA Course Proposal form [87].
  395.                          
  396.        In addition, already established projects often need
  397.        assistance; to volunteer, contact a project leader.
  398.        Consultantships are always available, as are memberships on GNA
  399.        open committees.  You can also help simply by becoming a member
  400.        of the GNA community: by teaching, attending classes, or by
  401.        contributing to one of our ongoing discussions, you can make a
  402.        difference.  Your first step: Look for the GNA registration
  403.        forms. They can be obtained via anonymous FTP[88] from
  404.        ftp.desy.de[89] [131.169.10.115]as file

  408.        Lest there be any doubt, financial aid is welcome as well.  The
  409.        GNA is currently run on volunteerism, with time and machines
  410.        donated by individuals and institutions worldwide.  Those
  411.        seeking to make contributions should contact the GNA treasurer,
  412.        <mjg@beach.cis.ufl.edu> (see (2)).  We will appreciate (and
  413.        make full use of) any donation.

  415.    (14) HOW WILL I PROFIT FROM DOING WORK FOR GNA?
  416.  
  417.         Working with the GNA offers a variety of benefits.  Membership
  418.         in the Academy means being part of a worldwide organization
  419.         which is on the cutting edge of distance education.  In
  420.         addition to being given the opportunity to work with
  421.         like-minded individuals with a variety of backgrounds,
  422.         becoming GNA personnel gives you access to a world of
  423.         information, as well as the chance to shape it.  More than one
  424.         GNA member has put included his work with the GNA on his CV;
  425.         the GNA can give you the chance to do work which will be of
  426.         value in more ways than one.  Best of all, working with the
  427.         GNA means helping to further education worldwide, while doing
  428.         exactly as much as you want, when you want to do it.  The GNA
  429.         has unparalleled flexibility as well as unequaled
  430.         opportunities.

  432.    (15) WHAT ARE GNA'S FUTURE PLANS?
  433.  
  434.         GNA has a long-term plan and a short-term development plan for
  435.         1994. These highlight our plans for future development.  In
  436.         addition, ideas about the GNA's future can be found by
  437.         perusing the GNA projects list [see (2)] archives of
  438.         discussions [See (5)], and in any conversation with a GNA
  439.         member. This is an exciting time for the GNA - and a great
  440.         time to become a part of it.

  442.    (16) HOW DO I DO ANONYMOUS FTP?
  443.  
  444.         Pretty much everything mentioned here is available by
  445.         anonymous FTP. FAQ lists cross-posted to news.answers and
  446.         rec.answers can be gotten from rtfm.mit.edu[95] [18.70.0.209],
  447.         under /pub/usenet/news.answers or under
  448.         /pub/usenet/more.specific.group.name"anonymous FTP" is just a
  449.         way for files to be stored where anyone can retrieve them over
  450.         the Net.  For example, to retrieve the latest version of the
  451.         General GNA FAQ, do the following:
